I LOVE CHRISTMAS!! I love the excitement in the air and since we generally have snow, the crunch under my feet. I totally enjoy the Christmas music, which I start to play right after Thanksgiving. (because after all Thanksgiving is an important holiday also).
I love to think about the gifts I will give to others. This is something important to me. I like to give gifts with purpose and meaning, something special, that will be remembered for years to come.
Family traditions are also very important to me. Every year we celebrate the birth of our Savior with a Live Nativity shared with family, friends, and neighbors. We love to have the children take part in the Nativity, dressing up as shepherds and angels. We have 3 wisemen we have ask to play the part, and have also chosen a Mary to ride on our donkey Gus led by Joseph.
We have camp fires, music and a narrator for this special story out of the bible that teaches us about the birth of Jesus. This is a special tradition for our family. What an important time to remember.
Why was I inspired to write “The Christmas Gift, a story told by Grandma Cookie?”
A child close and dear to me didn’t know or understand the story of the birth of Jesus. One morning after the nativity, I woke up and had this idea for a book go through my head, a way I could lovingly teach this child the meaning of Christmas. I sat up and wrote the rough draft of this story on a piece of scratch paper from my nightstand. I didn’t want to take a chance I would forget any part of it. After nine months of working, taking pictures, and editing, the book was finally just the way it needed to be. I had completed “The Christmas Gift.” It was ready to share.
I love Christmas books. They help build treasured memories. In our home I have a Christmas library of all the books we have read as a family over the years. I love to add books to this library, books that our family will enjoy reading together. Our kids are not always here at Christmas time, so I take this opportunity to send new books to them, so they can continue the tradition with their families.
Christmas books, just like any other book an author writes, is a way to express something they enjoy and hold dear to their heart. Books are written to teach, entertain and share with others. Each of the following books are written by different authors. Each author has different ways they express their thoughts on Christmas.
Jingles is sure he can fly. He believes it with all of his heart. He dreams about someday pulling Santa’s sleigh. While everyone tells Jingles that he can’t, Jingles believes. In this fun story, the author Erik Island tells a story about Jingles. The pictures are bright and colorful as Jingles takes this adventure with Santa Claus.
This story takes place in The Chesapeake Bay and is inspired by true events. Marco the Manatee had come all the way from Florida. His skin didn’t look well and he had tiny little white blisters known as, Florida frostbite. What was he doing all the way in the Chesapeake Bay. The author Cindy Freland tells the story of this Christmas adventure taken with her family and Marco the Manatee.
Because of health issues in their family the author Meikele Lee shares her thoughts on how Christmas would be different if Santa was a Tubie. She shares different terms and ideas about their Christmas because of the illness. The illustrator Rebecca Robertson expressed her feelings of Christmas through her illustrations. If you or someone you know has various health issues, this story may help them feel they are not alone.
What would Christmas be without a book including angels. Books are so good at teaching children, what better time of the year to teach a child about giving and sharing. The “Angel with One Wing” is a good example of how to share with others.
Although this story is not a Christmas book I felt the need to add it. It fits right into the theme of Christmas. This is a good book to teach children about the creation of the world. A good lesson on how God created the earth, and then everything in it in 6 days and then the seventh day, the Sabbath he rested. If you are looking for a good book to teach about God this may be what you are looking for.
Snowflake the cat loved to daydream about what the snow would feel, taste, look, sound and smell like. She laid dreaming on the couch while Sarah decorated the Christmas Tree. Snowflake was dreaming about snow, and how wonderful it would be. She was so excited when she and Sarah saw the snowflakes gently glide to the ground. What great excitement she felt.
This cute little penguin is the highlight of the zoo. He is loved by the public and also everyone that works there. Fluffy is born with a special gift and with that gift he has learned how to help others. When his parents are taken from the zoo a special helper helps him find them. Join Fluffy on this special Christmas adventure. The grade level for this book is 1-5.
As we quickly approach this holiday season, I hope you will slow down and take a little time to cherish the things that are important. Maybe spend a little more time enjoying the little things around you. Maybe start a new family tradition, focus on spending quality time with your family, possibly even enjoy a Christmas story.
I hope you enjoyed my blog post. Please share this with others that would enjoy it.
Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas from all of us at Brenda’s Kids Books.
